Mariah Carey / I’ll be loving you long time

I can’t believe I’m starting this blog about new pop music with something so out of date. Here’s Mariah Carey’s new video for “I’ll be loving you long time”:

I’ve never really understood the Mariah Carey is the biggest selling female artist of all time thing. (I’m pretty sure thats her official title). My timeline of Mariah is - big hair, bad suit - that album with the rainbow on the front - glitter - breakdown - comeback - ‘the biggest selling female artist of all time.’ But that shouldn’t stop me appreciating a good pop song (well, techinally R’n'B - this blog really isn’t living up to its name, is it?).

The problem is I just can’t like this song/video. This is for a number of reasons. The first is the song itself. Its very album track, very (even for a pop song) repetitive, and it does that whole ‘known and respected in the right circles’ rapper bridge. I do not approve.

The video upset me even more. I don’t know who made this but it seems they all sat round and thought “Ok, popular in the early 2000s?”

“Destiny’s Child!” Survivor reference - check!

“Christina Milan!” That video where she danced around in that bikini in weird fluid - check!

“Mariah Carey!” Really? Well, lets see if shes still got any of those weird oversized denim shorts knocking about… - check!

Good pop music should be creative, fun, easy to dance to, and easy to remix. This song ticks none of these boxes. Sorry Mariah, it looks like Miley “Destiny Hope” Cyrus is going to beat you in the old sales department if you keep releasing stuff like this. (And her parents were even coy enough to make a Beyone reference in her own name. Billy Ray, we salute you. Even if you are a bit pervy.)

Shit but good. Love it.
